The play, A Doll's House, is a good play so far. Nora, the wife in the play is very jauntily and takes a lot of her pride in her looks. She potrays herself as an liar. Helmer, her husband, on the other hand is a strict man. They have a father and daughter type of relationship. For example, Helmer calls her his squirrel.
Mrs. Linde, a friend of Nora's is a refined woman. She tries to convince Nora to tell her husband the truth. Nora is also seen incredulously. Krogstad, the lawyer is very clever. He says that he is going to blackmail Nora if she doesn’t do what he wants her to do. He says "Look Mrs. Helmer, you know that’s a very dangerous admission."
Nora and Torvald have a very unique relationship. It is based on childish remarks and numerous nicknames. Neither one are treated the way a couple are “suppose” to treat one another. Torvald I believe is in the fault for this “father/daughter” relationship. Torvald calls Nora nicknames where she mistakes them for cute names. Torvald is a much respected man amongst society but doesn’t reat Nora like an equal. But because of their “unique” relationship I feel it will come to a sudden stop when Nora realizes why she is called these names.

ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement that Nora and Torvald have a father/daughter type relationship. Torvald is always talking down to Nora throughout the play, addressing her with pet names and speaking to her in condescending tones. Nora basically just obeys him, and together they don't really act like a "couple" that we would think of today.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree that Nora and Torvald have a father-daughter relationship. Torvald spoils and babies her and even calls her little nicknames teasing her. You would think they would be more mature and affectionate like a usual married couple.
